Keeping the govt. honest

The Congress leadership in Haryana is sensing that it’s time to pull itself together and attack the new BJP govt., given a most lacklustre start of the new administration and its going back on some basic promises to the electorate. Taking a leaf from its leaders at the Centre, the State Congress leaders are accusing the Khattar govt. of just selling dreams to the people. Ch. Khazan Singh, a senior Congress leader and spokesperson of the Haryana Pradesh  Congress Committee, asserted that while BJP had promised good days to the people of the country and this State, both the governments (at the Centre & State) are failing to deliver the goods. Singh told Friday Gurgaon that the BJP has not even been able to take care of the citizens’ basic needs – neither has the BJP been able to curb price rise nor has it been able to stop Pakistani aggression (with the result that thousands of people have been forced to migrate from

the J&K border). Achhe din is nothing but a false promise, said Singh. “The BJP gave an impression that its leader had some magic wand that would solve the problems of the people," he said. “Now that the power is with the BJP at both the Centre and the State, why is there no check on corruption or all the other maladies that were promised to be rooted out by them?” alleged Singh. Referring to the repeated allegations of land scams that were raised by the BJP prior to the polls, Khazan Singh wanted to  know why the government has not taken any action against the allegedly guilty.

‘Instead”, he said, pointing to the recent transfer of senior Haryana IAS officer Pradeep Kasni, “an honest official is being hounded because he exposed ongoing corrupt practices.” Continuing on Gurgaon issues, he said, “The BJP has been unable to reduce the prices of essential commodities. Further, they had promised better infrastructure in Gurgaon, more jobs in Gurgaon and South Haryana and better wages for workers. There is no change at all.

The BJP just misled people into believing that the Congress government was discriminating against this region. In fact, if an election is held now, I don’t think BJP will be able win even half its current seats," When asked about factionalism in the Congress Party, which had allegedly led to Its electoral debacle, Singh pointed out that the Congress is a democratic party where people are allowed to express their views and speak their minds. It is unlike the BJP, where there is only one leader nationally, and no one else is allowed to speak or take a decision. He added that the Congress was also unable to properly communicate its achievements to the people or to effectively counter the Bharatiya Janata Party’s false propaganda. “There was also a huge gap in the availability of resources between the two parties. The Congress could not match the BJP in resource mobilization,” he said. He also attacked the Gujarat model, calling it quite hollow, and inferior to the Haryana model under the 10-year Congress rule.

Talking about the next steps for his Party, the Congress spokesperson said that they will keep the ruling party on its toes by fighting alongside the poor and downtrodden. Singh is also planning to hold a Mahapanchayat of 360 villages of Gurgaon District in Sheetla Colony, to discuss the issue of the 900 meters disputed area and to prevent the Administration from undertaking any further ‘wrong’ demolitions. He would also fight for compensation to be paid to house owners who have suffered due to the recent demolitions. The Mahapanchayat will also ask for the transfer of the management of the Sheetla Mata Mandir to an independent board that is not controlled by the government. Coming back to the issue of land, Khazan Singh said that the new Land Acquisition bill introduced by the BJP was totally anti-farmer, and would lead to the worst land scams. “On behalf of the people, we’re going to be very focused on what actions the BJP takes or does not take,” he concluded.u
