Rigoletto is based on the Victor Hugo play, 'Le Roi s'amuse', about the libertine Duke of Mantua, who is encouraged in his licentious behaviour with the wives of his courtiers by his court jester, Rigoletto. A masterpiece by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, the production features great star singers – including Placido Domingo, Cornell Macneil and Ileana Cotrubas, with James Levine conducting.
