She is a charming beauty who has made her pre-teen dreams come true. Apeksha Porwal (22) was recently crowned Femina Miss India Delhi 2015 at a beauty pageant hosted in Gurgaon.
Apeksha means hope, or expectation, and she sure has lived up to her name. A graduate in Economics (Honours) from the renowned St. Xavier’s College of Mumbai, she has been grooming herself in right earnest, with an aim to win the glittering title of Miss World. She has cleared the first major hurdle. With the tiara of Miss Delhi, she has qualified for the Miss India contest. In an informal chat with Friday Gurgaon, Apeksha candidly reminisces on her past and shared her future prospects and plans. “During my school days, although I was viewed as a naughty girl, I was a front bencher – meaning that I never neglected academics,” she says. While she was very observant of the prevailing fashion trends, she also developed an interest in social service - she has been one of the livewire activists of Janata Meals, a forum that sells affordable, nutritious and hygienically prepared food in select slum areas of Gurgaon. “I credit the development of this outlook in me to my sister Abhilasha; she has transformed me,” she says.  “I truly love her and share everything with her. My family has always been very supportive of my every move,” adds Apeksha. Speaking about her likes and dislikes, she notes with a twinkle in her eyes that, like other aspirant models, she is not an avid foodie - except for a sweet tooth for some delicacies of Mumbai. About her other hobbies and artistic pursuits, Apeksha recalls, “I learnt Kathak and also took  a fancy to hip-hop dance sessions along with my friends. These have helped me maintain my figure. I also love instrumental music and I have even learnt to play a couple of instruments. However, despite an ear for music, my voice is not that good. I may also mention that I read a lot, mainly topics of a mild nature. And I do like the outdoors, travelling and visiting new places.”

Apeksha’s father is a chartered architect who practises in Mumbai and was  a member of AAP.  Her mother is a Yoga teacher, who has guided her on maintaining a holistic lifestyle. Apeksha discloses that at the age of 16 years she won Miss Teen India 2009 – which paved the way for her participation in the Miss Teen International pageant in Chicago (US). Since then she has been crowned with more titles. Besides being adjudged the winner of Vero Moda/Only Model Hunt 2010, she also participated in the Navy Queen 2010 contest. However, despite being a part of the glamorous world, she continued to volunteer for social service. Beaming a smile, she says, “Apart from being a professional model and a volunteer, I also wanted to be an entrepreneur. It was during my research in this endeavour that I met Jassi; and that is how I came to Gurgaon and started Janata Meals. So I am the ‘co-founder’ of this movement, which caters to the needs of the have-nots in our society.”

To the poser as to what is her plan after the Miss India 2015 contest, Apeksha replies, “As such I have never planned something that is not viable. At present I am focused on my next contest, and for that I am working out at least five times a week, with focus on muscle training. I will continue eating healthy. I will also simultaneously start preparing my wardrobe and my talent, and the preparation for other subtitles. I believe that dedication and hard work are the two important mantras for success.” She also confides, “While Bollywood has not been my objective or dream, I may respond if they knock at my door.” This fun loving girl next door has a mature life mantra: “Often I have uttered these words: One day your life will flash before your eyes; make sure it is worth watching! So believe in yourself, set a worthwhile long-term goal that is of value to society, and achieve it. That should be the route to happiness,” she says. Commenting on other social issues, she admits that she favours the abolition of Section 377 and says, “In a way, it is a silly enactment that has fettered human freedom. It is time for society to be liberal, without being immoral.” Asked to spell out her views on personal relationships in one’s life, she frankly opines, “For an eve, the qualities of warmth, geniality and simplicity would be eternal assets. And I would desire a man to possess the trident of intelligence, chivalry and integrity.” Regarding Gurgaon, she says that it needs proper infrastructure. “There is no improvement in the traffic situation for the last one and half years. I would also like to add that the Administration should be more strict on the sensitive issue of women’s safety.” Way to go, young lady. Gurgaon will be rooting for you.
