A Non-Ambient Standoff

The standoff between the apartment owners and builders in the Ambience Lagoon complex is continuing, with the authorities not taking any sides and allowing the attrition to continue. The residents, who have been demanding that the builders hand over the maintenance of the complex, have been camping at the front gate of the complex for the last 27 days. A couple of days ago they had approached the DG, DTCP and senior administration officials, but there has been no change in their stance. The RWA has reiterated that they would continue the standoff till the builder leaves the complex. Pooja Aganpal, lawyer for the RWA, says that they have filed an application with the Deputy Commissioner, seeking permission for the erection of gates. “There is a proper process for the erection of gates as it comes under 'law and order'. The DC is the head of the committee (on that) and we have sought his permission,” she says. This action has been opposed by the builder, on the grounds that it would mar the façade of the building and is not a part of the original plan. A tiff between the apartment owners and the builders had also taken place on this issue of the gates, and the police had to intervene. Sanjay Lal, an office bearer of the RWA, says that they have appealed to the government and the administration to intervene in the matter and resolve the problems being faced by them. “We had expected that the BJP government would start a new chapter in Gurgaon by acting against errant builders, but there has been no change to date,” he asserts. A large number of women, children and the elderly, who are protesting at the entrance of the complex, are now having to face the freezing cold. However, even old ladies are determined to stay put at the gate, even at night, because they want freedom from the builder. But who will be responsible if someone dies due to the cold or the stress, asks Lal?
