The dreaded M word

Should I? Too early? Maybe not. Thoughts like these come thick and fast and circle the mind when you are contemplating Motherhood. Life before Motherhood is often like being on a rollercoaster, with an exhilarating new thrill each day. The focus is on building a career, socialising and having fun with your partner. After all, this is the prime time = those late nights, the aimless long conversations with friends, the long hours in the gym or even spending a lazy Sunday watching a movie. If you don’t enjoy it all now, then when? And then the reality of Motherhood sets in. You dread that these wonderfully awesome things would certainly be a thing of the past once you have kids.

No matter how many first hand experiences you hear, nothing can prepare you for what is there on the other side. But it is better to worry about that bridge only when you are ready to cross it. Though, once crossed, you may often look up towards the sky and ask, “Did you trap us?” There will never be any silence now. There will be the slamming of doors, stomping of feet and the dragging of chairs. You will be amazed to realise that toys have the loudest sound effects! You will realise that you are still on a rollercoaster, and you are still having ‘thrills’, but it is your child who is now the driver. I have found a most apt word for this condition and experience: it’s called ‘Mombie’. Wonder why it isn’t it a part of the dictionary already.

You will see the changes in you…suddenly you will have eyes at the back of your head, your reflexes and reactions will be faster than any speeding bullet, and your hugs and kisses will be more powerful than any drug. You will be amazed at your juggling multitasking ability. Mothers are not called super moms for nothing! However, you will not only start getting used to this, but will start enjoying the world in a new light. You will visit new parks, see many animated movies, play cute little games and indulge in much chitter chatter. You’ll also become a teacher…of sorts. And then it will dawn on you that life’s not that bad. In fact those moments of joy in Motherhood are the most precious.
