India has the world’s third largest population of people living with HIV/AIDS. But, at the same time, India’s efforts and consistent fight against HIV/AIDS is bearing fruit. According to UNAIDS 2013 report on HIV/AIDS, the country has reduced new cases of HIV infection by as much as 57% among adults, since 2001. However, we should not forget the amount of damage that has been already done. Further, there are ominous signs that the epidemic is on the rise in areas where HIV infection cases had not earlier been reported in significant numbers. “As we celebrate World AIDS Day 2014, efforts should be made to raise awareness about HIV prevention, which can further help reduce the prevalence of AIDS. We need to walk in the right direction, make the right investments, make society more inclusive and open and also have better programmes to help people in need,” said Dr. Ravindra Gupta, General Physician, Columbia Asia Hospital.
