Facial pimples are nature's revenge on boys who like hot showers and towel rubs, Germany's Beauty and Detergents Federation, IKW, reveals. Males are more likely to suffer greasy facial skin than women, because men's skin is around 20 per cent thicker than women's, explains Birgit Huber from the Federation. "Often it (men’s skin) lacks moisture, but it has much more active sebaceous glands, which often - especially in young men - produce an excess of sebum," she says. In the so-called T-zone of the forehead and nose, the density of sebaceous glands is the greatest. Because fat production is stimulated by hot water or strong rubbing, the best solution for men is to clean the forehead gently with lukewarm water, Huber advises. The best care creams are those that are as low in fat as possible and not abrasive; abrasive products cause the skin to react by producing more fat. Exfoliating once or twice a week is sufficient. Oily skin is prone to blemishes and the formation of pimples. Face tonics containing alcohol can help to disinfect the skin, while products with zinc and silicon regulate sebum production and so contribute to a clearer complexion. Better than greasy creams are light gels - they contain a lot of moisture. The skin care products used should be free of ingredients such as cocoa butter or lanolin, as these can clog the pores.
