Lemon is a small evergreen tree native to Asia. The Lemon tree blooms (a white flower) and produces fruit all year round. Each tree can produce between 500 and 600 pounds (about 250kgs) of Lemons a year. We know that Lemon is used mainly for cooking and garnishing, and that Lemon juice, pulp and rind are used in cooking and baking. The sour taste of Lemon comes from the high citric acid content; this distinctive sour taste makes lemon juice a key ingredient in various drinks (like ‘cool’ lemonade). Lemon is a citrus fruit. There is often a misunderstanding of Lemon’s pH (level/value). Outside the body, Lemon juice is acidic (pH is below 7); however, inside the body, when Lemon juice has been fully metabolised and its minerals dissociated in the bloodstream, its effect is alkalising (it raises the pH of the body above 7). Water with Lemon is considered to have an alkalising effect on the body.

Why should we prefer alkaline foods over acidic foods?

Our bodies require a blood pH level that is just slightly more alkaline than pure distilled water - between 7.35 and 7.45. Eating an alkaline diet helps the blood pH level to stay in balance without much effort. This is not to suggest that we should eliminate acidic foods from our diet altogether; we just need to shift the balance from our typically acidic diet to a more alkaline one. The normal cell structure is damaged in an acidic environment. Our bodies become acidic due to acid-producing or inflammatory foods, stress and overall wear and tear. The exception to this is the stomach, where the hydrochloric acid secreted there is intended to aid in the cellular digestion of food. The stomach is internally lined with special cells, to prevent the acid from burning through the stomach’s layers (the failure of which causes acidity or stomach ulcers).

Health Benefits

Lemon is used to treat indigestion, constipation, dental problems, burns, obesity, respiratory disorders and skin problems; it also helps strengthen our immune system, cleanse our stomach and purify our blood. Fresh lemon/lime soda is a good drink to have after lunch or dinner. Because Lemons are high in Vitamin C, they can prevent Scurvy. Drinking of Lemon juice can be a useful treatment for kidney stones. Lemon juice, being a natural antiseptic, can be used to treat skin problems: to reduce the pain of sunburn or to help ease the pain from bee stings; to treat acne and eczema; to help remove blackheads and smoothen wrinkles. Drinking Lemon juice mixed with water and honey helps bring a healthy glow to the skin.

Due to its high acidic nature the juice of a Lemon is useful for cleaning purposes. Lemon halves dipped in salt or baking powder can also be used to brighten up copper and clean kitchenware.
