The Haryana Chapter of NASSCOM launched a signature campaign at the Gateway Tower crossing on National Highway 8 to promote pedestrian safety in Gurgaon. Almost 10,000 people cross the National Highway at the Gateway crossing and Shanker Chowk in the mornings and evenings (around two hours), and they face a lot of problems on this 'dangerous' stretch. Prabhat Agarwal, who leads the NASSCOM initiative on Mobility, said that it is important that the government makes it easier for pedestrians to cross this road. "I will call this point 'yamraj crossing', as it is very dangerous to cross the roads with the traffic moving at such high speed," said Agarwal. He and his group are planning to collect almost 5,000 signatures and present them to the city police and the government in Chandigarh, to 'pressurise' them to take urgent steps for the safety of pedestrians. Bakshish Singh, the lone cop who was managing the traffic there, said that the pedestrians in the City also have to become more disciplined and abide by the rules. In his opinion the people need to be more patient while crossing, and should also avoid using their mobiles while walking. Rajesh Singh, who crosses the road daily at this point, asserted that there is strong and urgent need for a Foot Over-Bridge (FOB) on this stretch.
