The other day, while watching the World Badminton Final Championship, I saw a player eating a banana immediately after the match. The presence of vitamins, minerals and low glycemic carbohydrates has made the banana a favorite fruit among endurance athletes. Two distinct species of bananas are - the sweet banana (musa sapienta, musa nana) and the plantain banana (musa paradisiacal). Bananas are said to have originated in Malaysia around 4,000 years ago. From there they spread throughout the Philippines and India. Today, bananas grow in most tropical and subtropical regions, with the main commercial producers being Costa Rica, Mexico, Philippines and Brazil. We know that bananas contain natural compounds, which help to boost the body with natural energy that is gentle on our blood sugar levels. Bananas keep our bowels healthy, provide nutrients that regulate heart rhythm and contain vitamin compounds that are good for eye health.

Rich in Potassium

Bananas are known for their potassium content. Potassium is a vital nutrient because it helps to regulate blood pressure. Our bones also need potassium, as it helps to reduce calcium excretion. Eating bananas can help in keeping our bones strong, thereby reducing the risk of developing osteoporosis.

Natural Ulcer Remedy

Bananas can help in protecting our stomach against ulcers, or help to treat existing ones. This is due to certain compounds in bananas that create a thick protective barrier (against acid) in the stomach.. Above all, bananas also contain certain inhibitors, which can help to eliminate harmful (ulcer-creating) bacteria in the stomach.

Reduces Stress Levels

Bananas are a good source of tryptophan - a chemical that converts into the feel good hormone called serotonin. When we have good serotonin levels our overall mood and stress levels are much better. This also boosts our energy levels.

Source of Fibre
Bananas are a great source of dietary fibre. The fibre content helps the food to move smoothly through the digestive tract and improves digestion. One (normal) banana has more than 2.5 grams of total fibre, about half of which are insoluble. As insoluble fibre travels through our digestive tract, sweeps up waste and helps push it out. Eating bananas can help us have regular bowel movements that are soft and easy to pass.

Good for Eye Health

Bananas have a small amount of vitamin A – a fat-soluble vitamin that is vital for protecting our eyes and normal vision. The term ‘Vitamin A’ refers to a series of compounds, including beta-carotene and alpha-carotene. These compounds preserve the membranes that surround our eyes. Adequate daily Vitamin A intake also reduces the risk of night blindness

Even the peel of the banana contains a number of antioxidants rich in soothing and healing properties. Banana peels can be used as a home remedy to treat allergies, mosquito bites, skin irritation, acne and wrinkles.  So, go bananas and enjoy good health!υ
