Jaguar Land Rover has announced what it calls the ‘self-learning intelligent car of the future’ - a vehicle that takes note of owner preferences in order to provide an optimal driving set-up. The in-car intelligence system unveiled at the firm’s Gaydon premises in Britain recognises the driver and passengers as they approach. It then adjusts the climate controls along with seat and steering wheel positions before the journey starts. The system is still in its infancy, although the makers say it uses real-life technology, which can be made to work in the near future. The intelligent car can also choose music to suit a driver’s mood and send a message to the owner’s smartphone if it ‘thinks’ he has not woken up in time and risks arriving at the office too late…or might miss a flight. Naturally the car knows what journeys the owner takes, and automatically guides its driver by selecting the most efficient route. To do this the system logs into the owner’s personal timetable stored either in a tablet computer or in the web cloud. The car of tomorrow “uses a new learning algorithm to anticipate the driver’s next move and either eases or automates that action,” said a developer with Jaguar Land Rover. It means too that in chilly European winters, the car activates seat-heating units in good time. It also switches on the radio if the driver likes to hear weather bulletins or the news on the way to work. Jaguar Land Rover said the emphasis is on automating functions that might otherwise distract the driver, making the roads safer in the bargain.
