Over a week ago the Nation celebrated its 68th Independence Day and the talk of the town was the Prime Minister’s address delivered from the ramparts of the Red Fort. However, many commoners across India are unaware of the essence of these ‘rituals’. This ‘laxity’ is also prevalent among the youth, better known as Gen-X. All that seems to matter to them is that these occasions are public holidays…there is little concern with matters concerning the nation.

Our freedom fighters had wished India to be free from ‘slavery’, and to prosper. They bore great hardship…and even death. Have their sacrifices gone in vain? Have we taken our freedom for granted? Lamenting over this scenario, Dr. Siddharth Banerjee, who resides near Galleria Market and has returned after many years abroad, observes, “There were flags and chakras all over the place; kids were selling the Tricolour and balloons at various traffic junctions. When our PM hoisted the flag and spoke, it was inspirational. However, nothing seems to change at ground level. All of us are to blame. It is becoming fashionable for our westernised elite to ignore our heritage – of family and country - on convenient grounds.” Manjira Dutta, a noted producer of documentaries, says, “15th August is just a ritual now. We have all become selfish - we can’t blame any particular party or individual. We are forever comparing our country with others but we never seem to even do our own jobs well. We claim to respect beti and ma, but actually are the worst offenders. Our freedom fighters’ sacrifices should have been unforgettable; while we can’t pay them back, at least we can respectfully pay homage to them.” Reshmi Paul (21), a student of Government College, is marching with a flag in her hand. In response to FG’s poser, she says, “Freedom is yet to come to us. Why we are so orthodox, why can’t we be open-minded? Why does a guy need to ogle at a girl? We
are the future of our country. We don’t wish to be corrupt like our elders. What we need is only the due and mutual respect for a woman. I am hopeful, and proud of my country.”

Hoisting flags and delivering motivational speeches won’t salvage the problems of the ‘have-nots’. There should be an attempt by all Indians to carve out something from the heap of rubble in which the nation is trapped. It is not a question of who will bell the cat. Many individual and collective actions need to be taken in right earnest.
