Nightcaps a bad choice for insomniacs

A nightcap is a popular sleep aid - by depressing the central nervous system it can make a person sleepy. But ‘one more’ can be too much of a good thing, a German professor warns. One - yes, just one - glass of beer or wine before going to bed is plenty, according to Juergen Zulley, who teaches Biological Psychology at the University of Regensburg. “Sleep isn’t restful if you consume more than that, because the body, instead of resting, is breaking down the alcohol,” he explains. “This disrupts the regulation of deep sleep and dream phases, leading to sweating, a rapid heartbeat and/or frequent awakening.” A daily nightcap could also gradually lead to alcohol addiction, Zulley adds. Medically speaking, someone is said to have insomnia if they have trouble falling asleep or in sleeping through the night, at least three times a week for more than a month, and suffer because of it or are impaired during the day. Insomniacs should first try to adopt a healthy lifestyle, such as not eating too much in the evening. There are also some home remedies. Relaxation techniques such as meditation can, by alleviating stress, enhance the ability to sleep. Excercise may tire you to sleep or over-stimulate blood circulation and metabolism – thus making it harder to fall asleep. Experts suggest that rather than exhausting yourself in the evening, you should have an intensive workout in the daytime, so that your body has time to ‘power down. A walk in the evening is fine. Like lullabies sung to young children, music can relax adults and lull them to sleep. The best music to fall asleep to is quiet Classical or lounge music. There are also special sleep CDs, with relaxing sounds such as those of ocean waves.
