More than half a million elderly people are waiting for vacancies at nursery homes in greying Japan, the government said. About 522,000 elderly people are on the lists as of March, up 24 per cent from 421,000 in December 2009, the Health Ministry said. Two-thirds of them need nursing care such as toilet support and meal assistance. By 2050, people aged 65 and over will make up nearly 40 per cent of Japan’s population, according to a projection by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research in Tokyo.
